Violinist Marisa Sorajja is currently an Artist Diploma candidate at
the Colburn
School Conservatory of Music in
Los Angeles, California. A native of Amarillo, Texas,
and the daughter of immigrant parents from Thailand, she began her violin
studies at
the age of three. She has performed throughout Asia, Europe, and the United
States.
In July of 2006, she made her European debut performing the Sibelius Violin
Concerto
at the Teatro “Giuseppe Verdi” in Busseto, Italy. She returned to Italy
again in 2007 as
a featured soloist to perform in Cremona’s Auditorium della Camera di
Commercio and
in Cella Dati’s Villa Ugolani Dati.
In
2003, Ms. Sorajja performed under Jaime Laredo in Carnegie Hall twice during
the holiday season as a
participant in the New York String Orchestra Seminar. During
the 2006-2007 season Ms. Sorajja served as the associate concertmaster of
the Debut
Orchestra, and was appointed to the concertmaster position in the fall of
2007. In
February 2007, she was heard live on the radio as part of the Los Angeles
County
Museum’s “Sunday’s Live!” series. She will return to the series again in
February 2008
performing chamber orchestra works. In January 2008, she was invited to join
the
Jeunesses Musicales World Orchestra (a UNESCO artist for peace) on their
winter tour
where she served as acting concertmaster during their concert series in
Holland. With
the orchestra, she performed under conductor Josep Vincent in prestigious
venues such
as the Philharmonie of Berlin, Kurhaus Scheveningen in The Hague, Schouwburg
De
Lawei in Drachten, Muziekgebouw aan’t IJ in Amsterdam, and the Palau de les
Arts in
Valencia, Spain. On the tour, she also performed at the inaugural concert
for the
Auditori Teatre in La Vila Joiosa, Spain.
Recently, Ms. Sorajja has performed chamber music with violinist Henry
Gronnier, Deutsch Grammophon
pianist Ricardo Castro, and harpsichordist Lucinda
Carver at the Maestro Foundation. Additionally, Ms. Sorajja performed
chamber music
with the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s principal cellist Peter Stumpf, the Los
Angeles
Chamber Orchestra’s concertmaster Margaret Batjer, cellist Antonio Lysy, and
faculty
members Ronald Leonard and Paul Coletti as a member of the Colburn Chamber
Music
Society. Ms. Sorajja has participated in several master classes with members
of the
Juilliard, Ysa˙e, Penderecki, and Guarneri String Quartets. In 2006, Ms.
Sorajja
participated in master classes with William Preucil, concertmaster of The
Cleveland
Orchestra at Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, California.
Ms. Sorajja has attended various music festivals including the ENCORE School
for Strings for four consecutive
summers, and the Casalmaggiore International Festival
in Italy where she studied with renowned pedagogue Taras Gabora. Ms. Sorajja
can
also be heard on the NAXOS label, with whom she recorded with in 2000 as a
member
of the Amarillo Symphony.
Prior to her entry at the Colburn School, Ms. Sorajja obtained her Bachelor
of
Music degree from the University
of Southern California under Robert Lipsett in 2004.
She continues to study under him at the Colburn School. Ms. Sorajja performs
on a
1775 Giovanni Batista Guadagnini “The Borgerth.”
